Irlen syndrome

Irlen Syndrome, formerly known as Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome, is characterized by significant difficulty effectively processing full-spectrum light. An individual who suffers from Irlen Syndrome can experience many different symptoms, some of which include:

difficulty reading printed material
poor penmanship
inadequate written expression abilities
insufficient math and computation skills
light sensitivity
headaches and/or migraines
eye strain and fatigue
drowsiness in bright light
difficulty with high contrasts
a restricted span of recognition
a lack of sustained attention
poor depth perception

Irlen Screening and Filter Evaluation Procedures

Irlen Screenings are administered by several clinicians in our office who are Certified Irlen Screeners and serve as the initial step in determining if an individual suffers from Irlen Syndrome. Should an individual screen positively for Irlen Syndrome and find benefit in using the selected overlay(s), he or she may be a good candidate for Irlen Spectral Filters, which are worn as eyeglasses or contacts. Filter evaluations are conducted by our Irlen Diagnostician, Dr. Jones.

If you are or your child is new to JCCTA and seeking an Irlen Screening or Diagnostic Filter Evaluation, please print the applicable ability packet below, fill it out in its entirety, and bring it with you to your appointment. You may also submit these documents in advance.
